Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to factory reset an Apple Watch Series 9, whether you're selling, giving it away, or troubleshooting a persistent issue. Make sure you back up your watch first, as factory resetting will erase all content and settings.
How to Factory Reset an Apple Watch Series 9
Step 1: Unpair the Apple Watch from Your iPhone (Recommended Method)
Unpairing your Apple Watch from your iPhone will automatically back up your data and restore the watch to factory settings.
Open the Watch App on Your iPhone
- Ensure your Apple Watch is near your iPhone and the two devices are connected via Bluetooth.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
Go to “My Watch”
- Tap on your watch at the top of the screen under “My Watch.”
Select “Unpair Apple Watch”
- Tap the small (i) icon next to your Apple Watch’s name.
- Select "Unpair Apple Watch."
Enter Your Apple ID Password
- You’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock (which prevents others from using your watch if it's lost or stolen).
Confirm
- Follow the prompts to confirm the unpairing. The process may take a few minutes as your iPhone creates a backup of your Apple Watch's data.
Once completed, your Apple Watch Series 9 will be reset to factory settings and unlinked from your iPhone.
Step 2: Factory Reset Directly from the Apple Watch (Without iPhone)
If you don’t have your iPhone nearby or want to reset the watch without unpairing, you can do it directly from the device.
Open the Settings App on the Apple Watch
- Press the Digital Crown to go to the home screen.
- Tap the “Settings” app (gear icon).
Navigate to “General”
- Scroll down and tap “General.”
Select “Reset”
- Scroll to the bottom of the list and select “Reset.”
Tap “Erase All Content and Settings”
- Tap on “Erase All Content and Settings.”
- If you have a passcode set, you'll need to enter it at this point.
Confirm the Reset
- You'll be prompted to confirm that you want to erase all data from your watch. Tap “Erase All” to confirm.
If your Apple Watch is paired with a cellular plan, you’ll also have the option to either keep or remove the plan. Choose based on your needs:
- Keep Plan if you’re planning to pair the watch again.
- Remove Plan if you’re selling or giving away the watch.
The Apple Watch will now reset itself, which may take a few minutes.
Step 3: Reset Using Find My (If You Can't Access the Watch)
If you don’t have access to your Apple Watch, you can still erase it using the Find My app on your iPhone or through iCloud.
Open Find My on Your iPhone
- Open the Find My app on your iPhone, or go to iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID.
Select Your Apple Watch
- Under the “Devices” tab, find and select your Apple Watch from the list of devices.
Erase Apple Watch
- Choose the option to “Erase Apple Watch” to remotely erase all content and settings.
Confirm Erase
- Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the erasure.
This will reset the Apple Watch remotely, even if it's not within range of your iPhone.
After the Reset: Pair Your Watch or Set It Up as New
Once your Apple Watch Series 9 is reset to factory settings, you can either set it up as a new watch or restore it from a backup:
Pair Your Watch Again
- If you’re keeping the watch, bring it near your iPhone and follow the pairing instructions.
Restore From Backup
- During the setup process, choose to restore your watch from a backup if you want to get your previous data and settings back.
If you’re selling or giving away your watch, the new owner can now set it up with their iPhone.
Important Notes:
- Activation Lock: Even after a factory reset, Activation Lock will remain enabled unless you unpair the watch from your iPhone or remove it from your iCloud account. Be sure to remove it from Find My before selling or giving it away.
- Battery: Make sure your Apple Watch has enough charge or is connected to the charger before resetting to avoid any issues during the process.
And that’s it! Your Apple Watch Series 9 will now be back to factory settings, ready for a fresh start!
